Measuring for a Cinch or Girth: (Grab a helper and a flexible seamstress measuring tape!)

1. When measuring for a Western cinch, place the pad, and saddle on the horse with all billet straps attached and looped/ tied, the way it would be when you ride. (This allows you some adjustment room, and enough billet strap to work with.

2. Next, use a flexible measuring tape or a piece of string... have a helper stand on one side of the horse, and you on the other. Now go from the end of the off billet to the other end of the near billet strap.

Remember to leave enough billet room to be able to tighten or loosen the straps! This is especially important if your horse gains, or looses weight with the seasons!

3. Mark the string and then measure from end to mark, OR note the measurement on the tape, and write down this measurement (Usually this will be about 42" or 44"). This will be the size you will need to order. SHF uses end to end measurements. The only exception is our string girths, which are shorter at first and give and stretch as the knots tighten with use. :)

Girth should look like this when properly measured. About half way up the tummy. This allows for elbow room for your horse to be comfortable.

When measuring for an English Girth:

1. Place pad and saddle on horse.

2. Measure from the middle of off billet strap, under horse to middle of near billet strap. (Measuring at the middle of the billets, will allow for weight gain, and weight loss.)

3. Write down this number, this is the size girth you will need. (Average English girth is 62" will depend upon the billet length and type of saddle.) :)
